The excess electrons then flow out of the negative side of the battery, through an electrical device, and then back to the positive side.

Voltage Should be at Least 12.6 Volts

While the voltage of a lead acid car battery should be at least 12.6 volts, the current should be around ten amps. This means that the battery should be fully charged to be able to power the electrical circuits in your car. As long as the voltage is within this limit, you'll be fine. However, you should still periodically check the voltage of your battery. The most important thing is to make sure you have a fully charged battery before a long trip.

A good quality lead acid car battery can last as long as five years. Regular charging/discharging will deteriorate the lead plates over time. The lead plates will no longer produce useful current and will need to be replaced. Luckily, a good modern battery should last for at least five years when used daily. You should be able to use it for a decade. You should only have to check it once every few years.
